Steel vs composite toecaps: You decide

Which do you prefer – steel toecaps, aluminium toecaps or composite? If you haven’t tried all three for yourself, then this guide is for you.

When it comes to buying safety trainers or boots, we have clients that will specifically ask for models with steel toecaps, and others who are happy to explore options including either aluminium or composite toecaps.

At iSB Group, we believe the choice of toecap material should come down to individual wearer preference.

Here’s our guide to the pros and cons of each of the options, so you can decide for yourself what’s best for you…

Steel toecaps

Pros: Low cost, excellent protection
Cons: Heavy, temperature conducting, unsuitable for metal-free environments

The tried-and-tested, traditional choice, a steel toecap is a safe bet for many people who may have heard about alternative toecap materials but don’t have the confidence to purchase those products.

Made from heavy duty steel, steel toecaps offer high levels of protection from crushing and falling objects, at a relatively low cost.

But the weight of the steel means safety trainers with steel toecaps are between 30% to 50% heavier than their counterparts with aluminium or composite toecaps – something that cannot be ignored when you factor in the extra musculoskeletal strain that could cause to the wearer.

Steel toecap safety trainers also tend to have a smaller toe box, which may be uncomfortable for some people. Being made from metal, they are unsuitable for wearing in metal-free environments, and they will set off metal detectors, making them less than ideal for those required to go in and out of secure areas for work. What’s more, steel conducts and retains both heat and cold, which may cause discomfort for those working in extremes of temperatures.

Aluminium toecaps

Pros: Super strong and lightweight
Cons: More expensive, unsuitable for metal-free environments, temperature conducting

Aluminium toecaps are as strong as steel but, as a material, aluminium is much thinner, lighter and more versatile. This allows for a bigger toe box in any safety trainer and reduces the overall weight of the shoes by up to 50%.

However, this lightweight strength comes at a premium, and those purchasing safety trainers with aluminium toecaps will find them more expensive than alternatives with steel toecaps.

Being metal, aluminium toecaps will also set off metal detectors and conduct and retain heat and cold, making them unsuitable or inadvisable for certain job roles.

Composite toecaps

Pros: Non-metallic, lightweight, non-temperature conducting
Cons: May result in a slightly wider-looking safety trainer

Composite toecaps are made from lightweight, non-metallic, super strong materials like Kevlar, carbon fibre, plastic or fibreglass. Around 30% lighter than steel toecaps, they are ideal for those working in environments subject to extremes of temperature, because they do not conduct or retain heat or cold.

The only downside of composite toe caps is that they can come up wider than their metal equivalents, potentially leading to a safety trainer that looks bulkier in the toe area. This may put some people off, but it should be noted that it is just aesthetics, and has nothing to do with the safety of the toecap.

Something to consider…
If stressed beyond what they are designed to withstand, steel toe caps will bend, while composite toe caps could shatter. Both would result in injury to the foot, but a shattered toe cap may allow for the foot to be removed from the trainer for treatment more easily than a misshapen one.

In conclusion

So, which is better: steel toecaps, aluminium toecaps, or composite toecaps?

All provide a similar level of protection for the foot under normal working conditions. And while one option may suit some job roles or working environments better than the others, really the choice of which to go for ultimately comes down to wearer preference.

So, feel free to stick with what you know best, or choose to try something different. Just make sure you know what you’re choosing and why – and don’t forget to always purchase your safety trainers from a reputable supplier that can evidence good quality materials and manufacturing processes throughout its supply chain.
