Thermal socks – a necessity for winter comfort or an optional extra?

As warehouse manager, should you be providing these hard-working staples to your team this autumn, ready for the cold days and nights ahead?

Decide for yourself with our handy guide to keeping your employees’ feet warm at work…

Do I need thermal socks?

Wearing thermal socks helps prevent heat loss from the feet, which can be good for people working in cold environments, as well as those who struggle with poor circulation.

As most logistics roles involve either working outdoors to some degree, or in warehouses which can be freezing cold in winter, many logistics workers will find thermal workwear – including thermal socks – a must for staying warm and comfortable during the colder months.

Thermal socks: What you need to know

Thermal socks are made from special, insulating materials that trap in body heat, keeping feet warm and dry in cold weather.

Look for those with moisture-wicking properties, as these will wick away moisture caused by sweating, keeping feet dry, comfortable and odour-free.

Thermal socks buying guide

When it comes to buying thermal socks, there are a few factors to consider.

These include:

  • Fabric
  • Length
  • Price
  • Comfort
  • Fit

Fabric

Thermal socks may be made of different fabrics, including wool, cotton, acrylic, polyester, nylon and elastane. Most combine the best properties of several different materials for maximum warmth and comfort. A thick fabric is not essential – as it is often the thinner insulating materials that are the most comfortable for on-the-go, breathable warmth – but it is important to choose a high quality weave.

Length

Thermal socks come in a variety of lengths, with the most common types being knee-length or crew socks. When deciding on the best option for your needs, it is important to consider what footwear they will be paired with, as socks that end below the top of a safety boot are likely to be uncomfortable and may cause the boots to rub. Likewise, if thermal socks are to be paired with thermal long johns or thermal trousers, a long sock as well is likely to feel too warm.

Price

Thermal sock prices vary considerably, but are not necessarily reflective of quality. You don’t need to pay a fortune for good thermal socks. What is important is that you source good quality thermal socks from a supplier you can trust.

Comfort

Gone are the days of ‘thermal’ equating to thick, woolly or scratchy. These days, thermal socks are made from high-performing materials that allow them to offer good insulation for the feet without compromising on comfort. Active feet will be best supported by socks made from a tightly woven thermal fabric. Meanwhile, the best thermal socks have extra cushioning of some kind on the heel and forefoot, for added comfort.

Fit

Thermal socks should fit snugly and not slip down when you walk. Most have a tight fit around the arch of the foot to help keep the sock in place. Properly fitting thermal socks are the most effective, but remember that it also matters what footwear you wear with them – boots that are too tight will override the effects of even the best socks, leading to cold feet.

Thermal socks, boots – or both?

Can you wear shoes or boots with thermal socks?

Yes, but – depending on the type of shoe or boot – you might not want to.

Thick thermal socks are designed to be worn more like slippers, and are too bulky to wear with shoes or boots. They are also usually made from synthetic materials, which aren’t very breathable.

The best thermal socks for workwear are likely to be thinner ones made from merino wool, thick cotton or a high quality cotton blend. The natural fibres will allow air to circulate within the wearer’s shoes or boots, keeping their feet feeling fresh and comfortable.

Can you wear thermal socks and thermal boots together?

It’s unlikely that you would want to wear both thermal socks and thermal boots at the same time, as this would probably lead to overheating.
