Taking The Right Step: Safety Footwear

When most people think about dangers at work, they tend to think about the risks to the face (specifically the eyes), and the hands. When we think of protective gear, we think of hard hats, safety glasses, and work gloves. But most of us rarely think of footwear. Despite that, though, footwear is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can have when you’re on the job. Whether you’re a construction or landscaping professional, you cannot ignore your feet. When given the opportunity to speak out, employees will often put safety footwear at the top of their bug-bear list.

When you decide to buy safety footwear, you need to examine your needs, and the needs of your job. For example, if you’re on your feet all day, you need to have shoes that fit comfortably, and which provide proper support for your joints. However, that’s the absolute baseline when it comes to the shoes you’re wearing at work.

There are other qualities you need to think about when it comes to your footwear, though. For example, if there are likely to be nails, glass or other sharp objects in your working environment, it is important to be sure that your footwear has a pierce resistant midsole. If there’s going to be oil, grease, or other pools of slippery liquids, then you should invest in slip resistant shoes. If there’s a risk of something crushing your foot, then you should invest in hard cap, or steel toe, shoes.

Safety is a priority, no matter what your job is. Because long hours can leave you fatigued, and accidents can happen. If something goes wrong, you want to be sure your feet have a shield against misfortune.
