PPE and Workwear solutions for temperature-controlled warehouses
Working in cold storage doesn’t have to mean feeling cold. With the right personal protective equipment (PPE) and workwear solutions, you can keep your team warm, comfortable and working at its best, no matter the temperature.
From thermal gloves and headwear to protect the extremities, to base layers, waterproof safety footwear and more, make sure your workers are equipped with everything they need to protect themselves against cold-related injuries and illnesses with our guide to cold storage workwear and PPE.
Working in cold environments
Most cold-related injuries and illnesses happen because workers are unprepared and don’t have adequate clothing for the temperature conditions.
But, unlike in other logistics workplaces where a sudden onset of colder weather can catch workers unaware, organising workwear and PPE for temperature-controlled warehouses such as those used for cold chain storage should be a relatively straightforward task.
The constant temperature – albeit cold – means you don’t have to allow for environmental factors brought about by differing weather conditions, so with a little attention to the basics you should be all set.
Cold storage PPE and workwear: A checklist
To maintain a comfortable body temperature while working in a cold storage facility, your workers will need the following on their kit list:
1] Thermal underwear
Whether you call them thermals or base layers, thermal underwear is a must for working in cold environments. Lightweight and designed to be worn next to the skin, thermals simultaneously ensure you don’t get cold so fast and help to regulate your body temperature by wicking away sweat and reducing the heat that builds up during movement. Whether your workers are standing still or moving around lots, thermal underwear is a great way to maintain warmth without adding bulk. Find out more about thermal underwear.
2] Thermal gloves
Workers exposed to temperatures close to or below 0°c should wear insulated gloves wherever possible. Keeping the hands warm maintains their fine motor function, reducing the risk of accident or injury, and ensuring your workers can perform their work tasks to the best of their ability. It also helps to protect against frostbite and chilblains. When choosing thermal gloves, ensure to balance comfort, protection and dexterity of grip. Waterproof options are usually best for cold storage workplaces. 3] Good quality footwear
High-quality, properly-fitting and slip-resistant waterproof footwear will keep your teams safe and comfortable on their feet all day, and ensure no one slips on damp floors. Choose safety boots over safety trainers for a little more warmth as well as increased ankle protection. Opt for thermal footwear or choose to pair non-thermal safety boots with a good quality pair of thermal socks.
4] Thermal headwear
Most body heat is lost through the extremities, including your head, so investing in a lightweight thermal beanie hat is a good idea for cold storage workers. Where hard hats are required, a thermal helmet liner may be added, and a balaclava or scarf provided as needed.
5] Waterproof workwear
People working in cold stores, freezers and chillers should choose waterproof outer workwear layers, as the last thing you want to feel in cold temperatures is wet!
Dressing for cold storage work: Our tips
Equipping your cold storage teams with everything they need to stay warm and comfortable at work is only half the story.
Some further tips for success are:
- Choose quality. Invest in high quality items with a proven track record ‘on the ground’. Ask your workwear and PPE supplier for their recommendations, and many will let you try before you buy.
- Encourage your workers to wear several thin layers of clothing to stay warm, rather than add one bulky layer on top of normal clothing. Not only is this more efficient, it will also ensure their movement is not restricted.
- Educate them about the importance of micro-adjusting (e.g. opening a zip or temporarily removing a hat) to regulate body temperature if they start to feel hot.
- Remind them not to overdo it. It’s better to start off slightly chilly and warm up when you start to move than to overheat because you’re wearing too many layers.
- Ensure they take regular breaks. Encourage your teams to space out their allocated breaks during the working day and use the time to get somewhere warmer.
