Waterproof workwear ratings

Waterproof clothing is tested by sealing a section of fabric stretched tightly underneath a one-inch diameter tube. Water is added to the tube and the fabric observed to see how many millimetres of water the fabric is able to withstand before droplets begin to soak through.

Under the British Standard, waterproof workwear must achieve a rating of at least 1500mm in the test, otherwise it is designated only ‘water-resistant’ or ‘shower-proof’. In general, waterproof workwear rated between 1500mm and 2000mm offers sufficient weather protection for everyday use.

Waterproof workwear can also be tested according to the European Standard for protective clothing EN343. Garments are tested by applying a quantity of pressurised water and given a rating from 1 to 3 (3 being the highest) in each of two areas: their ability to protect against rain, fog and humidity; and breathability in those conditions.
